Regardless of the adjectives we assign to it (pampering, rejuvenating, therapeutic) or the reasons we seek it out (a luxurious treat, stress relief, pain management), massage therapy can be a powerful ally in your healthcare regimen. Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related. And perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. Massage therapy can without a doubt help manage stress and in turn can decrease the likelihood of heart disease, decrease anxiety, enhance sleep quality, increase joint flexibility and increase energy. Studies have shown massage to increase circulation, which increases immune system function and speeds recovery time. Overall, massage therapy is an effective and enjoyable way to reduce stress, increase health and increase your quality of life.
Most Common Forms of Massage:
Swedish massage, which refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles.
Deep tissue massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fibers of the muscles, tendons, and fascia.
Lymphatic massage or lymph drainage massage is a technique used to help increase lymph flow. Increased lymph flow removies harmful substances from the tissues and increases immune function. Lymphatic massage can be useful in cases of edema, sports injury or for people experiencing a sluggish immune system or those suffering from a lack of energy.
Pregnancy massage or Prenatal massage is a natural, touch therapy treatment aimed at alleviating pregnancy related symptoms. Relief from muscles cramps, spasms, and myofascial pain, especially in the lower back, neck, hips and legs. Pregnancy massage also increases blood and lymph circulation, which can reduce swelling. Other benefits also include, increased outcome of labor and ease of labor pain, increased skin elasticity that can help reduce stretch marks, and helps stabalize hormone levels by lessening anxiety.

Karen Stanger
My name is Karen Lee Stanger and I am a Capricorn originally from Cape Town, South Africa. I have been in the "people" business for 24 years, first in catering and food service followed by 5 years in advertizing. I love being with people and had always been interested in alternative health. I was ready to leave behind all the deadlines and pressure that goes with working with the media and focus on something quieter and with more sincerity. Being a nurturer myself, I decided to move towards the healthcare industry, but noticed how Western medicine seemed to have drifted away from caring about the patient and treating symptoms instead of finding the root cause and treating the whole person. There was so little information about prevention and natural remedies that I wanted to be a part of helping a movement to grow and help one person at a time. I studied full time for one year at the International Academy for Health and became a massage therapist specializing in Aroma Therapy. I have been following this path for the last 15 years, 12 of which were here in San Diego. I am trying to incrase my knowledge in Homeopathy as well as other alternative remedies and nutrition. I honestly believe prevention is the cure and that how we treat and what we put in our bodies depicts how a body functions. My husband is in the music industry and we have three daughters who bring us constant joy and they love getting massages from mommy! I love anything to do with the outdoors, the ocean and everything green. I spend my free time doing all things creative. I feel very blessed to be a part of the NCFC family.

Lara Stillo
I am a Holistic health Practitioner, Nationally Certified, with eight and a half years full time in the field of massage therapy. Currently I work with two chiropractic offices; private clients; Mueller College as a bodywork instructor; and three hotel spas. I receive bodywork weekly, as well as chiropractic treatments and occasional acupuncture. Staying physically active is an integral part of my life because I love it! I combine home practices of yoga and pilates with light jogging/walking and going to the climbing gym. Meditation and time for inner growth and balancing are also a must for me. The human body amazes me, and since we each only have the one we were born with, I believe we need to take the best possible care of it. Helping people to understand their bodies better, to heal from injuries, to manage stress, and just to feel great overall is what I seek to achieve through my work. I love what I do. It is a never ending learning process, never boring, always rewarding.
