When head pain becomes a regular part of your week instead of an occasional nuisance, it’s worth finding out what’s actually driving it. At Elements of Health, care starts with identifying the source of your headaches so treatment can be based on what your evaluation shows.

When Head Pain Actually Starts in the Neck

Many headaches, including tension-type and cervicogenic headaches, can be connected to the neck rather than the head itself. If your headache tends to show up alongside neck stiffness, tight shoulders, or restricted motion, and the pain seems to travel upward into your head, there may be a musculoskeletal component at play.

Migraines can be more complex, involving a neurologic component beyond the neck and spine. Sorting out which type of headache you’re dealing with, and where it may be coming from, shapes the approach to your care.

Why Screen Time and Stress Compound Each Other

Headaches don’t always come from a single cause. Often, a combination of daily habits, physical stress, and other triggers may be involved:

  • Prolonged screen time and forward head posture at a workstation
  • Lack of movement throughout the day
  • Shoulder and neck tension from stress or clenching and grinding of the teeth
  • Previous injuries, including car accidents, falls, or sports injuries
  • Poor sleep and inadequate hydration
  • Stress hormones and certain foods

That’s why the whole picture matters. Posture may be one piece of the puzzle, but it’s not automatically the explanation for every headache.

The Signs That Point to a Musculoskeletal Cause

Tension-type and cervicogenic headaches may present as a tight, gripping sensation that starts around the base of the skull or neck and travels upward. You may also notice stiffness or reduced range of motion in your neck that seems to accompany or precede the headache itself.

Migraines can look different, sometimes involving throbbing pain, sensitivity to light, or other neurologic symptoms that go beyond typical tension patterns. Because headache types can overlap, a thorough evaluation helps determine what may be behind your symptoms.

When a Headache Signals Something More Serious

Certain headache patterns and accompanying symptoms warrant urgent medical attention rather than chiropractic care. Weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking or confusion, significant vision changes, difficulty walking, high fever, or a sudden headache far more intense than anything you’ve experienced before are all reasons to seek emergency care rather than waiting for an adjustment.

A Full Picture Before Any Adjustment Begins

Every patient starts with a thorough exam rather than an assumption that one headache is just like another. The evaluation includes a look at spinal alignment, range of motion, and posture, along with a nervous system scan and X-rays when needed.

From there, a treatment plan is built around what’s actually found. Care may include chiropractic adjustments, stretching, mobility work, and home exercises tailored to your needs.

Progress is also tracked over time. Follow-up scans in the office provide another way to monitor changes alongside how you’re feeling and moving.

Fewer Headaches, More Days Feeling Like Yourself

Patients may begin noticing changes fairly quickly, although longstanding headaches aren’t necessarily resolved within the first couple of weeks. Within the first month, the goal is to see meaningful changes in how you feel and move.

A Recent Success Story

One recent patient came in with headaches that had worsened over the past year, becoming nearly daily by the time she started care. Her evaluation also revealed underlying degenerative changes, suggesting the problem had been developing for some time. Within two weeks of adjustments, home stretches, and in-office red light therapy, she reported that her headaches had decreased to just once or twice a week.

Everyone progresses differently, which is why our practice doesn’t put a set number of visits on headache care before completing an evaluation.
