Pregnancy-Related Back and Pelvic Pain Care
in Rancho Bernardo

close up of expectant mother experiencing back painGrowing a baby changes nearly everything about how your body moves, and for many women, that can show up as low back pain, hip discomfort, or pelvic pain that makes everyday movement harder. As pregnancy progresses, even finding a comfortable position at night can become a challenge. At Elements of Health, care is built around what your body is doing right now, not a one-size-fits-all pregnancy plan.

Why Your Center of Gravity Keeps Shifting

As pregnancy progresses, the growing abdomen shifts your center of mass, changing the demands placed on the low back and hips. The hormone relaxin also loosens the ligaments around the pelvis, which may contribute to pelvic girdle pain and changes in how the area feels and moves.

Add in increased muscle tension, and it’s easy to see why low back, hip, and pelvic discomfort can become more noticeable as pregnancy progresses. Some women also find it increasingly difficult to get comfortable at night.

How Discomfort Can Shift Throughout Pregnancy

Every pregnancy moves through these changes differently. As posture and movement adapt to a changing body, low back and hip discomfort may become more noticeable. Pregnancy-related sciatica can sometimes appear during the second trimester, while the third trimester may bring more general discomfort.

Some of the changes and symptoms seen during pregnancy include:

  • Loosening of the pelvic ligaments as relaxin levels change
  • A shifting center of mass as the abdomen grows
  • Increased muscle tension through the low back and hips
  • Pregnancy-related sciatica
  • Pelvic girdle pain and general discomfort later in pregnancy

Rather than assuming every pregnant patient is experiencing the same problem, care starts with looking at what’s happening for you.

Techniques Adapted to Every Stage of Pregnancy

Chiropractic care is modified throughout pregnancy to account for changes in your body and your stage of pregnancy. Our practice utilizes the Webster Technique, along with pregnancy pillows and a drop table to adapt positioning, pressure, and technique to the individual patient.
Every pregnant patient also goes through a thorough exam first to determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for her. Any relevant information from your OB or midwife can be taken into account when planning your care.

Care That Adjusts as Your Pregnancy Progresses

How often you’re seen depends on when you begin care and what you’re experiencing. Some patients may be seen weekly or a couple of times a month, while someone starting later in pregnancy with a specific concern may initially be seen more frequently.

When mom and baby are doing well, chiropractic care may continue through the later stages of pregnancy and up until delivery. Care is reassessed along the way, with ongoing communication about how you’re feeling and how your pregnancy is progressing.

More Comfort and Better Movement as Your Body Changes

Many pregnant patients with low back or hip pain report moving more easily and managing everyday activities with less discomfort after their first few adjustments.

Women experiencing pregnancy-related sciatica may also report relief from their symptoms, while others find it easier to get comfortable and sleep at night. Throughout care, the primary goals remain: musculoskeletal comfort and better function as your body continues to change.
